You know, my peers and I saw this assault against farms/farmers coming forty years ago. It made working in our agency almost unbearable. Even though the majority of my time with USDA Rural Development (previously called Farmers Home Administration) was spent working with rural cities and communities, building water and wastewater collection/treatment systems, I did work four years in a county office where the farm loans were and are made. So between those four years, and conversations during agency conferences, I learned the sickening truth of how our tax dollars are used; it literally polarizes agency responsibilities and employees’ consciences. Even though I’ve been out of the agency for fifteen years, the memories still sicken me.
The legislation now proposed in Congress to prevent minors within farm families from working on their families’ farms is pure, unmitigated revenge. Many of us whose careers were (and those who sill work) with USDA agencies that include programs for rural areas and farms, know precisely what is going on under the direction of this President. It started within 24 hours after his inauguration, with the multitude of executive orders that had been prepared long in advance for his signature. (I have no doubt Bill Clinton advised him on that, as that was exactly what Bill did after his own inauguration.)
All these farm-relaed regulatory, procedural, and policy changes are designed as revenge for the slavery years. Many of my non-Black friends are taking early-outs (retirement) even though it means a serious cut in their annuities. Others are retiring even though they had planned for decades to work longer. Blunt abuses within employment and merit promotion procedures are equally at fault. Of course, these disgusting violations of regulations, employee Codes of Ethics, and the Constitution at large, have gone on throughout most federal agencies , to one degree or another, under every Administration, dating back to the mid 1800′s. But this time, under the current Administration, those women and men weilding the power are doing so maniacally and without a shred of conscience.
